Smorgasbord of Spinning with Jill Pettifer

Beginners: 4 hours of spinning fun to get a taste of spinning for beginners, various way of learning to draft the fibres before moving to treadle a wheel.
Intermediate: participants will learn clever new tricks and try out unusual fibres!
Time will be available for trouble shooting with already spun yarns.
There will be different spinning wheels to try out: from handheld spindles, treadle wheels, electric and jumbo spinners. Participants will learn about different fibres, their properties and yarn structure, thus enabling participants to build on their knowledge. Participants are encouraged to bring fibres they are interested in to learn to spin. Jill will also bring a variety of fibres to demonstrate with!
Jill Pettifer is an accomplished spinner, with a strong background in textile technology, she is keen to share her knowledge. Jill feels this will enable you to progress and develop your practical skills to create yarns and fabrics from a variety of natural fibres, including blends. Jill has taught textiles (ANU, CIT, Dickson College) for more than 40 years.

TUITION: $75/$85 incl some yarns/fibres
EQUIPMENT: Variety of spinning devices will be set up to use.People can bring their own (well functioning) spinning wheel to the workshop. Note: there won’t be any time to do repairs to wheels.
Coffee/tea + biscuit are supplied
BYO lunch (nearby shops sell nice sandwiches/pies as well)

- Fibres you are interested in learning to spin
- already single spun yarn (details will be provided), 3 small containers to hold balls,
- fabric off-cuts (2 hand fulls), unusual fibres you may have in your stash,
- any interesting yarns you may have to analyse,
- lazy Kate, Niddy Noddy, hand carders, comb, scissors, flicker (optional),
- your own (well functioning) spinning wheel with few extra bobbins.
